The University of Northern British Columbia will grant more than 800 credentials during the 2014 Convocation. The largest ceremonies take place at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre this Friday, followed by graduation events in Terrace, Gitwinksihlkw, and Quesnel next week.
May 30 – Prince George – Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre – 9 a.m.
The ceremonies begin on May 30 with a procession from the Bentley Centre to the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre at 9 a.m., followed by the College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences (CASHS) convocation ceremony at 9:30 a.m. At 11:45 a.m. the CASHS students will have their class photo taken at the ceremonial stairs.
The class photo for College of Science and Management (CSAM) students will take place at 1:15 p.m. at the ceremonial stairs, followed by their procession from the Bentley Centre to the Northern Sport Centre at 1:30 p.m. The CSAM convocation ceremony will run from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In case of inclement weather, the processions will take place solely at the Northern Sport Centre.
Students are invited to lunch at the Agora Courtyard in between the festivities, where there will be live music and entertainment.
Honorary degrees will be handed out on the day to renowned ethnobiologist Nancy J. Turner (during the CASHS ceremony) and award-winning architect Michael Green (during the CSAM ceremony).
Ian Picketts will be awarded the Governor General Gold Medal and Johnathan Brian Gorman will receive the Governor General Silver Medal. The valedictorian for CASHS this year is Joanna Paterson, while the valedictorian for CSAM is Cameron Bell.
UNBC will also hold convocation ceremonies at three of its regional campuses:
June 2, 2014 – Northwest (Terrace) – R.E.M. Lee Theatre – 2 p.m.
Thirty-three students will graduate in Terrace this year, including two firsts: the first degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, Matthew Beedle, and the first degrees of Master of Social Work, Irlanda Gonzalez-Price and Melody Johnson. Additional students will graduate with degrees in Master of Education (Counselling and Multidisciplinary leadership), and Bachelor of Science (Integrated), while 16 Bachelor of Science-Nursing degrees will also be conferred.
June 3, 2014 – Gitwinksihlkw – WNN Affiliate Campus – 1 p.m.
